  • Useful tips for those who plan to renovate

Planning to renovate your home any time soon? Please consider these couple useful advices. These advices will help you make your life easier and cheaper!

First of all it is highly advised to provide personal contact information, like e-mail, cell-phone number, alternative numbers for the best communication between customer and contractor. Key for the entrance door is also needed for the avoidance of scheduling and because of it-delays in job completing.

In order to save your own time it is highly recommended to remove your personal things like clothes and furniture away from the area where renovation or remodelling is just to take. This way you will not have to clean those things after.

If the scale of renovation is extensive, moving out from the house would be also advised. In this way homeowners avoid constant noise, dust, smell of building materials, interruptions in plumbing and electrical power, interior climate changes, etc. But, when living somewhere else, it is essential for the homeowner to be available, upon request from contractors’ side. This is vital in case of unpredictable situations during renovation process.

Renovation is an overwhelming process and often homeowners tend to push in something extra, which is not included in written contract. You have to understand that everything extra-is extra, and it costs additional money and time, on top of proper planning and scheduling. Remember never try to ask trades to do something extra, as far as they are doing strictly their direct duties.

Another advice for the homeowners is just to be patient. Never rush trades to be faster. And I tell you why.  When pushing trades you make them nervous and quality of workmanship will suffer after. Please take your time and allow trades to do their job in order to gain the best possible result.

Also as a homeowner you probably don’t aware of nature of materials and technologies of installation processes. That’s why it might look like parts of the jobs don’t look finished. Trades often tend to leave and come back to the process after some time, needed for settling of some materials. In other words it needs proper procedure steps for the purpose of complete finished look.

Of course it is well understood, that general contractor is responsible for his trades from A to Z. And sometimes they need help.  But our trades are responsible and serious guys, who understand their job after showing and explaining it to them.

Moreover a piece of advice to all homeowners is: never try to hire your own trades to save money or “help” contractor to do the job faster. And I’m not joking now. Here comes serious issue of liability. What if your trades are not insured and not covered under WSIB? Who is going to be responsible for their accidents, errors and omissions?

Also it would be worth of mentioning couple words about building materials. It is advisable to buy stock (standard) supplies, instead custom (special order). The reason is of course time of availability. As well try not to delay material selection, though this process might be very frustrating. Do not try to order materials online, as far as it could be stressful. Materials could get damaged during transportation, sometimes it could even be wrong material upon delivery.
